Hardware Nuts: Pocket Door Locks 101
Pocket doors are a great solution for tight spaces, such as bathrooms or pantries, where a hinged door would be in the manner. They're too a user-friendly option for home offices and dens. You can easily shut off the room while working or studying, and slide the doors open up when the room is not in use.
And while you'll probably never see the hardware that makes a pocket door piece of work, yous will run into (and employ) the lock on a pocket door almost every day. So how practise yous know which lock to choose?
Pocket doors locks are generally available in ii functions: passage (not-locking) or privacy (locking). Passage pocket door locks part as a pull, allowing you to slide the door in or out of the pocket. They're ideal for closets, pantries and laundry rooms. The locking mechanism on privacy pocket door locks makes them platonic for bathrooms and bedrooms. Privacy pocket door locks also feature an emergency release push button on the exterior side and then you can hands rescue a kid who'southward accidentally locked themselves in the bath.
Circular and square pocket door locks are the two most common types of pocket door locks. (Fancier, mortise-style pocket locks do exist, but they are often more expensive and more complicated to install.) Both styles come up in a variety of finishes, and then it's piece of cake to match your pocket door locks with the rest of your hardware.
Foursquare pocket door locks require cut a notch in the edge of your door, which ways yous should get-go with a basic door slab for easy installation. Most foursquare pocket door locks feature a simple lever that flips out from the door border and acts as a finger pull to slide the door out of the pocket.
Round pocket door locks often fit in a standard ii-1/8" hole, allowing you to use an existing door for a pocket door. This is a great way to repurpose an older door with lots of grapheme or only save on your remodeling upkeep, and it makes installation a breeze! If you're reusing an existing door, exist certain to correctly measure the backset so you lodge the right latch size for the new pocket door lock. (The backset is the altitude from the edge of the door to the heart of the 2-1/8" hole. Most doors have a backset of either 2-three/viii" or 2-3/iv".) Round pocket door locks usually have a tab that pops out of the edge of the door so y'all can hands pull the door out of the pocket.
If yous take a ready of two pocket doors that come together (often called converging pocket doors), you can create a locking set with 2 circular pocket door locks. Only install the cups of the passage lock on one door and a privacy lock on the other. Mount the strike for the privacy on the edge of the passage door, and you lot're done! The latch from the privacy will concur the two doors together when the lock is engaged.
Pocket doors (and their locks) can open up up a world of possibilities in your abode. Await at your house and run across if they are correct for you.

Aaron - December 13, 2021I need to find recessed/flush door hardware for the door to the closet where the water heater is located ( we will take a barn door sliding over it, so a door knob doesn't work). Can I use pocket door hardware on a regular hinged door? It doesn't need to lock, information technology merely needs to close securely.

Unfortunately, none of our pocket door locks are bachelor in a keyed role. I believe some other manufacturers may offer this – try searching online for a "keyed pocket door lock." Adept luck!
Susan Taunton - December 7, 2020We take a heavy solid pine pocket door that leads to an apartment in our business firm that we are going to hire. And so we want to give the renter the ability to lock this door from the inside when they are in their apartment and the ability to lock the door with a fundamental when they get out the house. (The door also needs handles on either side, but we can deal with that separately if demand exist.) Could you recommend a hardware solution for our pocket door locking needs?

Kay - July 1, 2019Our daughter is 12 months old and can push open our existing passage enabled pocket doors. It's problematic because the cat box is on the other side and oh so inviting to a curious infant. We want to supplant the passage mechanism with a locking pocket door mechanism equally a child safe lock…employing the aforementioned cutout and installing a catch on the other side. Here'south the impaired part of the question…is the locking mechanism reversible then the lock can exist deployed on the public side of the door? The images I see of the lock itself look like they only work one direction…or does the catch part work both ways or tin it be flipped. TIA
